Frequently asked questions
CDs, legality, other operating systems, current state — the questions that always come first.
Last updated: 12 August 2026
Do I really need the original CDs?
Yes. Without them there are no maps, no graphics, no fonts and no mission texts — and therefore no game. The program reads the discs and derives everything on your own machine.
Why not just bundle the game data?
Because it is not ours. Akte Europa and everything derived from it belongs to
its respective rights holders. What ships is code only; the bundled .pck is
about 200 KB and carries nothing from 1997.
Does it run on Linux or macOS?
Not yet. Godot itself would be capable of it, but a build for other systems is simply not set up. Right now: Windows.
What is already playable?
Skirmishes and the 33-mission campaign. The simulation runs on the original’s own numbers — prices, hit points, attack and defence, range, reload time, speed, fuel and ammunition all come from the game’s records rather than from guessed constants.
Is the project finished?
No. Next up are the full original campaign, a Reborn campaign of its own, multiplayer, a better skirmish mode, the in-game language switch, a reworked interface and a switchable Reborn graphics mode.
What does it cost?
Nothing. The code is on GitHub under GPL-3.0. Donations are voluntary and do not buy features.
Can I help?
Yes, and not only as a programmer: reverse engineering, graphics, testing with your own discs, translation and documentation are just as welcome. There is no application process.
How do I know the numbers are right?
Because they are verified rather than guessed: 13 sprite frames pixel-identical against a second implementation, 26 map files consumed with zero bytes left over, 4147 unit pictures identical, 601 design records reproduced exactly, 33 mission texts matched character for character. Where something could not be recovered, the code marks it as our own assumption.
Something missing or wrong? Additions are explicitly welcome — just get in touch. info@openreborn.com
